SHE FOUND A NEW HOME!! CLICK HERE!!

This morning, as a buddy of mine drove to work via the Williamsburg Bridge, he noticed something: a small gray dog chained to the pedestrian walkway, shivering, completely drenched and half-frozen. As you probably heard, New York had a very big snow storm last night; we’re almost certain her owners left her out in it overnight to die.

001

That same dog is now sleeping comfortably at my feet, well-fed, fully-bathed, and having been given a clean bill of health by the local vet.

005

My friend brought the dog to his office and spent the entire day making calls, not realizing how hard it is to find a home for a pit bull. Something like 1 in 800 rescued pit bulls find homes, and as far as I can tell, no “no-kill” shelter will accept them. I offered to take the dog for the night, since I live closer to my buddy’s office than he does.

002

Since she showed up to my apartment, she’s been a doll. Hasn’t barked once – in fact, I think the only sound I’ve heard was when she began whimpering when I left the room.

She’s young – the vet estimated her to be 1-2 years old. She knows how to sit, seems to understand stay, and is one of those great dogs that stays very close to your side, leash or no leash. Also, she has a gorgeous gray coat, and as you can see, neither her ears nor tail are clipped. Finally, she’s been exceptionally friendly and playful, both with my roommates and all 30+ co-workers at my friend’s office.

003

My friend’s going to take her back tomorrow and try to find her a home, but prospects are not looking hopeful, and eventually he’ll have to take her to a kill shelter. He asked if I’d put up some pictures on my site to see if anyone out there might be interested in taking her in, or perhaps has some advice on what to do with her (we e-mailed a few pit bull rescue groups, but they had little to offer).

Don’t get me wrong – I am fully aware that she’s a pit bull, and that there’s a rep that goes along with the breed. But this one has been well-behaved and quiet, and I just interrupted her sleep to scratch her belly and all she did was kick her foot and wag her tail happily.

She seems like a beautiful pet for the right person, and if you’re at all interested, please do not hesitate to e-mail me at nycscout@gmail.com. I’ll put you in touch with the person who found her and of course, you would certainly be able to meet her before committing to anything.

006

Anyway, I just finished eating a burrito and some nachos, and I noticed the dog watching me, looking for a treat. At first, my “master” instinct kicked in and I told her to go lay down, which she did. But then I broke down and gave her some left-overs.

After all, she just spent the night in one of the worst snow storms of the year, and probably only has a short time left anyway – why not spoil her a little before she’s gone?

PS – If you can do anything to help spread the word via Facebook/Twitter/Tumblr, both me and my new lady friend would be forever in your debt.

also if someone wants to adopt her. make sure you get to know the person and Q and A them thoroughly . there are lots of people that will use her for fighting, as a bait dog or sell her to Lab’s. Its just crucial what people are doing. be careful!!

Hi. Your post was sent to me by a friend who knows I’m involved in pit bull rescue here in MA. While we have no open foster homes at the moment, I wanted to give you a couple of links for your friend. These are pit bull rescues in NY that are no kill. He should check them out. Thanks for helping this poor abandoned girl.

Hi! I am so happy for that sweet girl to have been rescued by you guys and to have found a wonderful home! Those creeps that tied her to the bridge actually did her a huge favor!! I know you are probably not planning to become a placement agency for pitbulls, lol, but I have a terrible problem. Last week a pitbull was “given” to me, which was basically my frantic attempt at keeping her from going to the shelter. She is a sweet, loving girl but my HOA doesn’t allow “aggressive” breeds and my next door neighbor who is a cop has already said he will turn her in. I am having no luck finding even a foster home for her, As you know finding a home for a pitbull is next to impossible. You have been in contact with hundreds of people with big hearts, will you please help me save her???
Thank you being so sweet to that dog and thanks in advance for any help you may be willing to give,
    Corinne Smith

I just wanted to say thank you for taking in this gorgeous dog, and finding her a home. I’d be lying if I said the story didn’t make me cry, and I hope the horrible people who left her tied to a bridge someday find themselves left somewhere to die alone. As a pit bull owner, I can only say that they are the best, most loyal, sweet dogs whose reputation is unfounded. I hope more people realize that it’s not the breed, it’s the owners.

Again, thank you for being such great person. And your friend is as well. It gives me hope that there are people like both of you out there.

I am a glass half full person, and it has occurred to me that perhaps she got loose from her owner (who has kept her in good health, trained her well and made her the sweetheart that she is), and someone hooked her to the fence (because they could not take her in) and to keep her out of the street so the owner could find her. Perhaps that owner is out trudging the streets looking for her and crying. Has every effort been made to notify authorities that she has been found?

Great outcome! I hope the adoption works. I assume the dog was checked for a microchip. …I just had to return 2 dogs I adopted to North Shore Animal League, two young puppies. Puppies are used, I suspect, to get people in the door. I did NOT visit the shelter to adopt; nor did I want to save a puppy. … I gave two dogs a great/expensive week! The Terrier is very adoptable, and will have no trouble. The 2nd dog was my best friend’s choice: a Border Collie pup. I know this breed, and I am too old to care for it for 15 years. So is he. He’s over 70. And yet, North Shore gladly took his $250. …

A conversation about intelligent adoption is going on, but popular feelings can get in the way. What you did, fostering the dog until it was placed is the most noble thing to do! Taking in an unknown, staying with it, until proper adoption.

I, on the other hand, walked into a shelter to experience a shelter. Unprepared, saying “I am just looking, today.” After several hours there, I lost touch with my reality at home. I took care of 2 dogs all week, at great expense, but I worried about dying on them. I’m HIV+/AIDS. Healthy for now, but in 15 years? I was too ashamed to bring that up when the rat-race started. We were encouraged to fill out adoption forms “for later” – “good for 3 months.”

I wrote already, via Facebook, that out of 70 pets adopted last Sunday at North Shore Animal League, 7 were returned on the following Saturday alone. They get returns every day of the week.

So, my heart bled enough to try to change my life. I considered giving up my apartment in Manhattan to live in my ex-‘s house: for the dogs. The wildest schemes were invented to keep them. But I was the one who sat with them 24/7. And I began to research, yesterday – after the fact. I knew things would go badly, in the future.

Those who want to save a dog or cat, or other animal; it’s a noble notion. But with 4 million needless mercy-killings per year in the USA, are we up to the long-term commitment?

Anyone considering pet adoption needs to ask all friends if it is okay with them. At the beginning, especially with puppies, it is like having a baby. There are counselors galore to help with the panic.

Most of all, do not hate yourself for giving an animal a chance: to discover that it won’t work. No one benefits from a bad relationship. Get out, fast. Then, do research. In NYC, it’s easy. The Humane Society, Animal Control, and dozens of other shelters/organisations can help us determine how we can help.

    Hello.

A friend and I have been working hard to try and save dogs similar to this one and it is very difficult to find them kind and capable forever homes (as 90% of them are pits and pit bull mixes). Did you happen to receive other proposals for homes that we could investigate?

Please let me know and thanks!
