SHE FOUND A NEW HOME!! CLICK HERE!!

This morning, as a buddy of mine drove to work via the Williamsburg Bridge, he noticed something: a small gray dog chained to the pedestrian walkway, shivering, completely drenched and half-frozen. As you probably heard, New York had a very big snow storm last night; we’re almost certain her owners left her out in it overnight to die.

001

That same dog is now sleeping comfortably at my feet, well-fed, fully-bathed, and having been given a clean bill of health by the local vet.

005

My friend brought the dog to his office and spent the entire day making calls, not realizing how hard it is to find a home for a pit bull. Something like 1 in 800 rescued pit bulls find homes, and as far as I can tell, no “no-kill” shelter will accept them. I offered to take the dog for the night, since I live closer to my buddy’s office than he does.

002

Since she showed up to my apartment, she’s been a doll. Hasn’t barked once – in fact, I think the only sound I’ve heard was when she began whimpering when I left the room.

She’s young – the vet estimated her to be 1-2 years old. She knows how to sit, seems to understand stay, and is one of those great dogs that stays very close to your side, leash or no leash. Also, she has a gorgeous gray coat, and as you can see, neither her ears nor tail are clipped. Finally, she’s been exceptionally friendly and playful, both with my roommates and all 30+ co-workers at my friend’s office.

003

My friend’s going to take her back tomorrow and try to find her a home, but prospects are not looking hopeful, and eventually he’ll have to take her to a kill shelter. He asked if I’d put up some pictures on my site to see if anyone out there might be interested in taking her in, or perhaps has some advice on what to do with her (we e-mailed a few pit bull rescue groups, but they had little to offer).

Don’t get me wrong – I am fully aware that she’s a pit bull, and that there’s a rep that goes along with the breed. But this one has been well-behaved and quiet, and I just interrupted her sleep to scratch her belly and all she did was kick her foot and wag her tail happily.

She seems like a beautiful pet for the right person, and if you’re at all interested, please do not hesitate to e-mail me at nycscout@gmail.com. I’ll put you in touch with the person who found her and of course, you would certainly be able to meet her before committing to anything.

006

Anyway, I just finished eating a burrito and some nachos, and I noticed the dog watching me, looking for a treat. At first, my “master” instinct kicked in and I told her to go lay down, which she did. But then I broke down and gave her some left-overs.

After all, she just spent the night in one of the worst snow storms of the year, and probably only has a short time left anyway – why not spoil her a little before she’s gone?

-SCOUT

PS – If you can do anything to help spread the word via Facebook/Twitter/Tumblr, both me and my new lady friend would be forever in your debt.

    Hi Mr Angel,

  2. BED & BISCUIT:Where Dogs Run Free! Avatar

Thank you for rescuing this sweet dog and posting..it ended up all over facebook and from there, just about everywhere else. You’ve gotten some great advice..mostly about being extremely cautious about who gets this dog. I personally wrote and gave you rescue leads and phone numbers. Please contact them, especially Beth. This dog has an angel riding on her shoulders to have been found and taken to a caring home where you reached out to the canine community for help. Make sure there is no chip in her, as she could have been stolen and dumped.

I recently boarded a beautiful pit at Bed & Biscuit and loved every moment of her company. They are amazing dogs. http://www.bednbiscuit.com
Let me know if you need more help contacting experienced rescue people. Shelley

That’s a might expensive fancy collar she’s wearing..make sure that she wasn’t stolen and then dumped for whatever reason. Someone took the time to train her and she looks healthy and well fed. This might be someone’s beloved pet. Post to craig’s list under lost/found and pets all over NYC and NJ and Westchester.

Three of my friends simultaneously emailed me your post about a gorgeous grey canine beauty. Thank you so much to you and your friend for rescuing her and giving her such loving care. I still can’t understand how people can abandon pets, especially in such a cruel way. She must have an amazing spirit to have made it through such a storm.

I’ve been searching for a dog to adopt, and this girl seems the perfect match for me. I’d love to meet her. I have two questions:

    1) What is her height / weight?

I want to make sure she’s a size my building will allow. She seems so from her pictures.

    2) Do you think she’d get along with a low-key, playful, 1 year old cat (who incidentally likes to play fetch)?

My roommate and I have devised a wonderful way to keep the animals safely separated while we’re gone, but of course, I’d want both animals to feel generally comfortable knowing the other is in the apartment.

Feel free to contact me via email (encrypted in reply). I look forward to hearing from you soon. Give her a hug for me!

    Kind regards,
    Kari Morris

She is a wonderful dog for a responsible adult or a couple. She has to be tested with kids and other animals. A previous writer is correct, her collar is dangerously tight. Good luck to you and her!!

If I didn’t have two dachshunds, I’d take her in a heartbeat. She looks so much like my Bella, who was rescued from a kill shelter in NYC when she was about 6months old. We got her at a time when everything you heard about them was B A D. She was the “Poster Pittie Girl” and was friends with EVERYONE on the block…..she even turned my Mom’s negative attitude about pits. It is true , though, that it really takes someone who is willing to work with them and not fear them. They are so smart and so loyal and I was never for one minute sorry I took my girl in. She was my good friend and I miss her still.
Keep us posted. I’m trying to think if I know someone who would be a good fit. She’ll find a good home. She deserves it.
p.s. Did you check to see if someone is looking for her at the shelter, etc.? I hate to think someone actually tied up such a beautiful, gentle creature on such a horrible night! She doesn’t look abused or mistreated from your pics. Looks pretty well loved.

I have several followers on Twitter and FB that love animals. I shared this with them. I’m at my limit for furry friends unfortunately–this seems like a lovely Pit. Some of my favorite dogs have been Pits, they are incredibly loyal and loving animals to the right owner. Good luck!

Thank you to you and your friend for being awesome and helping her! What goes around, comes around…to you guys, and also to the ones responsible for tying her up and leaving her with nothing. The world needs more people like you and your friend! I hope she finds a loving forever-home, good luck.

She is beautiful. Pits have a bad rep for nothing. Any dog can be “turned” bad by a bad owner, but all are born sweet. I LOVE the shot of her sleeping/ She is one lucky pup to be saved!

Please make sure that whatever potential home/rescue you DO find, to SCREEN carefully. There are lots of aholes out there who will use the dog to fight and rescues that are just not as reputable as they seem. PLEASE PLEASE check references and vet references and I don’t know, let me or anyone else know if you need help checking out a rescue’s reputation.

Wow…she is the female twin to my blue Pitt, Roscoe. Who is the sweetest dog I have ever owned. Easiest to train out of all my dogs also. The rep doesn’t follow all of them. She sounds like a sweetie too. I pray she finds a nice home! Sounds like she will…

TO ALL OF YOU WHO HAVE OFFERED TO TAKE THIS BEAUTIFULL GIRL SO SHE WOULD NOT END UP AT A KILL SHELTER. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PITS JUST LIKE HER ON THE DEATH LISTS AT THE SHELTERS DAYS, HOURS AND MINUTES AWAY FROM BEING KILLED. PLEASE
KNOW THAT JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT IN A NEWS STORY DOES NOT MEAN THEY DO NOT EXIST. THEY DO AND THEY ARE GOING TO DIE IF YOU DO NOT STEP UP AND DO THE RIGHT THING. I PRAY YOU WILL

God bless you and your friend, and may God help you to find this sweet-faced, sweet-natured young Amstaff (American Staffordshire Terrier; yes, purebred) a forever home soon. She certainly deserves it.

I found a small brown kitten New Years eve on a pile of snow outside Vandalia Houses in Brooklyn,N.Y.. I Kept the kitten and we are very happy together. I think the cold weather brings out the worse in people. Years ago I’d say be careful on those hot summer nights but lately its the cold.

Just wanted to add that whoever got to be the dogs new best friend..I hope they dont live in one of the states that are trying to outlaw owning pitbulls. I have a pitbull mix and my daughter owns two..with the proper training..they are the best dogs ever..they are full of love. Unfortunately..thanks to Mr. Vicks and the likes of many others…these dogs are looked as the biggest danger ever. How do you kill a breed because of what humans have done?
