SHE FOUND A NEW HOME!! CLICK HERE!!

This morning, as a buddy of mine drove to work via the Williamsburg Bridge, he noticed something: a small gray dog chained to the pedestrian walkway, shivering, completely drenched and half-frozen. As you probably heard, New York had a very big snow storm last night; we’re almost certain her owners left her out in it overnight to die.

001

That same dog is now sleeping comfortably at my feet, well-fed, fully-bathed, and having been given a clean bill of health by the local vet.

005

My friend brought the dog to his office and spent the entire day making calls, not realizing how hard it is to find a home for a pit bull. Something like 1 in 800 rescued pit bulls find homes, and as far as I can tell, no “no-kill” shelter will accept them. I offered to take the dog for the night, since I live closer to my buddy’s office than he does.

002

Since she showed up to my apartment, she’s been a doll. Hasn’t barked once – in fact, I think the only sound I’ve heard was when she began whimpering when I left the room.

She’s young – the vet estimated her to be 1-2 years old. She knows how to sit, seems to understand stay, and is one of those great dogs that stays very close to your side, leash or no leash. Also, she has a gorgeous gray coat, and as you can see, neither her ears nor tail are clipped. Finally, she’s been exceptionally friendly and playful, both with my roommates and all 30+ co-workers at my friend’s office.

003

My friend’s going to take her back tomorrow and try to find her a home, but prospects are not looking hopeful, and eventually he’ll have to take her to a kill shelter. He asked if I’d put up some pictures on my site to see if anyone out there might be interested in taking her in, or perhaps has some advice on what to do with her (we e-mailed a few pit bull rescue groups, but they had little to offer).

Don’t get me wrong – I am fully aware that she’s a pit bull, and that there’s a rep that goes along with the breed. But this one has been well-behaved and quiet, and I just interrupted her sleep to scratch her belly and all she did was kick her foot and wag her tail happily.

She seems like a beautiful pet for the right person, and if you’re at all interested, please do not hesitate to e-mail me at nycscout@gmail.com. I’ll put you in touch with the person who found her and of course, you would certainly be able to meet her before committing to anything.

006

Anyway, I just finished eating a burrito and some nachos, and I noticed the dog watching me, looking for a treat. At first, my “master” instinct kicked in and I told her to go lay down, which she did. But then I broke down and gave her some left-overs.

After all, she just spent the night in one of the worst snow storms of the year, and probably only has a short time left anyway – why not spoil her a little before she’s gone?

-SCOUT

PS – If you can do anything to help spread the word via Facebook/Twitter/Tumblr, both me and my new lady friend would be forever in your debt.

I have read over a lot of the responses to your fabulous rescue. Be careful when you rehome the dog. Pit Bulls do have a bad rap and yet are truly wonderful dogs. You will not know her true personality for a couple of months. But I would not send a dog out to North Shore! The are no-kill, but from what I have heard they do not have enough volunteers and the animals are there forever.
Guess there are two types of people in this world…the ones that truly love and care for their animals and then the ones that do not care and think nothing of where they leave them, how they treat them etc. Look at Vick.
Glad you took her in and you will feel all of the cuddles from her saying “Thank you” as all animals are so aware of the people that do rescue them.
    The previous owners are disgusting.

Thank you for the wonderful update! I am so relieved to know that she will not be going to a shelter… PLEASE check the home out thoroughly and vet references if they have other pets… just like everyone has said you need to be careful of who ends up with her! She is just precious! Good luck and thank you for saving her!

Thank you for saving that gorgeous girl. Hopefully now you can count yourself among those of us lucky to know the true nature of this amazing, misrepresented breed.

Hi – I can’t adopt her because I already have one dog in Brooklyn apt (only allowed one), BUT if you get to the point where you need a foster home for a few nights please let me know. I would be happy to foster her for a few days/nights if you are in a bind. Definitely do not want her going to the shelter because that is basically a death sentence for pit bulls (I got my beagle at the city pound and saw many pit bulls that would probably never get adopted). So contact me if you need a foster home for a few days in Brooklyn. freddiebean@yahoo.com

Is it possible the owners didn’t abandon this beautiful dog? Perhaps it was snatched and then left? Or the dog walker got mugged? I think it would be good to contact the local shelters to see if anyone is looking for this dog. It’s a great looking pup & seems that someone somewhere gave it some love.
Thanks for taking the time out to rescue this cutie. THANK YOU!!!

Hi! Thank you for helping to save this beautiful girl. Our rescue group (Pet Rescue of Mercer) is willing to care for this pretty girl until we can find her a wonderful forever home if she is good with other dogs. We are a no kill rescue group. We rescue all breeds of dogs. However, due to the overwhelming need we tend to get pitties the most. I know you have received lots of inquiries/interest from people wanting to adopt her. Please be careful when making your decision so that she finds a great home and can lead the healthy, happy and long life that she is so deserving of.

HOORAY FOR YOU AND FOR THIS BEAUTIFUL GREY GIRL!!

Just a follow-up to the email messages I sent you. I’m sure you have been completely deluged with comments, emails, etc. You have done a great thing by helping this dog. The world should have more people like you (and your friend who picked her up off the street) in it.

    Cheers.

I read your story about this beautiful dog you found. Please, please do not send it to a kill shelter. There is a facility in Middletown NY called Pets Alive (petsalive.com). They rehabilitate dogs and have a no kill policy. They will keep the animal for its entire life if they have to. Please call them at (845) 386-9738 and ask to speak to Trudy. They save dogs from high kill shelters in the south as well as in Puerto Rico at a place called Dead Dog Beach. They are an absolutely wonderful organization. I am sure this dog is adoptable from what you have described.

What a beautiful dog. My son would love this dog. If you don’t get any good responses, I would not mind taking her, but I live in Wisconsin!

It will be just fine 🙂

She cried , she has ms and is alone when here caregiver goes to work in the evening. I think this would be a great relationship for the both of them. This pup looks beautiful, sweet, and trusting (and, a tad worried) ! You sound like a very caring person who will do a good background check on potential owners before giving her away.

(A detail I noticed from the photos: Please loosen her collar! 😉 Looks very tight on her…)
