SHE FOUND A NEW HOME!! CLICK HERE!!

This morning, as a buddy of mine drove to work via the Williamsburg Bridge, he noticed something: a small gray dog chained to the pedestrian walkway, shivering, completely drenched and half-frozen. As you probably heard, New York had a very big snow storm last night; we’re almost certain her owners left her out in it overnight to die.

001

That same dog is now sleeping comfortably at my feet, well-fed, fully-bathed, and having been given a clean bill of health by the local vet.

005

My friend brought the dog to his office and spent the entire day making calls, not realizing how hard it is to find a home for a pit bull. Something like 1 in 800 rescued pit bulls find homes, and as far as I can tell, no “no-kill” shelter will accept them. I offered to take the dog for the night, since I live closer to my buddy’s office than he does.

002

Since she showed up to my apartment, she’s been a doll. Hasn’t barked once – in fact, I think the only sound I’ve heard was when she began whimpering when I left the room.

She’s young – the vet estimated her to be 1-2 years old. She knows how to sit, seems to understand stay, and is one of those great dogs that stays very close to your side, leash or no leash. Also, she has a gorgeous gray coat, and as you can see, neither her ears nor tail are clipped. Finally, she’s been exceptionally friendly and playful, both with my roommates and all 30+ co-workers at my friend’s office.

003

My friend’s going to take her back tomorrow and try to find her a home, but prospects are not looking hopeful, and eventually he’ll have to take her to a kill shelter. He asked if I’d put up some pictures on my site to see if anyone out there might be interested in taking her in, or perhaps has some advice on what to do with her (we e-mailed a few pit bull rescue groups, but they had little to offer).

Don’t get me wrong – I am fully aware that she’s a pit bull, and that there’s a rep that goes along with the breed. But this one has been well-behaved and quiet, and I just interrupted her sleep to scratch her belly and all she did was kick her foot and wag her tail happily.

She seems like a beautiful pet for the right person, and if you’re at all interested, please do not hesitate to e-mail me at nycscout@gmail.com. I’ll put you in touch with the person who found her and of course, you would certainly be able to meet her before committing to anything.

006

Anyway, I just finished eating a burrito and some nachos, and I noticed the dog watching me, looking for a treat. At first, my “master” instinct kicked in and I told her to go lay down, which she did. But then I broke down and gave her some left-overs.

After all, she just spent the night in one of the worst snow storms of the year, and probably only has a short time left anyway – why not spoil her a little before she’s gone?

PS – If you can do anything to help spread the word via Facebook/Twitter/Tumblr, both me and my new lady friend would be forever in your debt.

To all that adopt and rescue and care for the general well-being of strays…bless you all! Dogs have feelings just like humans do and can give gratitude…this pup will give years of it!

I got my little sweetheart pit from a rescue/fostering non-profit group in NY. I lived in WA. Heights at the time. It looks like you have plenty of people/offers. I just wanted to thank you and your friend for taking her in, obviously many other people probably passed her by, while she was tied-up there. My pit is 9 years old now, we live on 5 acres just outside Seattle, she looks after and protects our two cats, (such a mean breed, ha!). Pit’s have gotten such a bad rap in the media..they’re so loyal, such little clowns, and are so smart/trainable; which is why they’re often targeted by cruel people to fight/be aggressive. What has happend to this breed/and to many other living creatures, by humans, is just so sad and inhumane. However, congrats on doing the right/good thing. 🙂 Another has been saved, and is going on to a loving home!

What a beautiful dog. I’d love to tie up the owners to a post outside in sub-freezing temps in a foot of snow. Please be careful who you adopt her to. Maybe a local rescue would be willing to do a home check and I agree with earlier posters who recommended an adoption fee. There are some unsavory people out there that would take a dog like this and either fight her or use her as a bait dog if she has a more submissive personality.

Please make sure that you check out the residence of the lucky person that gets this beautiful girl. You do not want her to wind up in the same situation she was found or even worse abused or used for dog fighting.

I just sent this post to a dog rescue place in NY to see if they can take her in instead of her going to a kill shelter. There is no need for her to be euthanized when there are rescue groups out there. Please consider a rescue group before surrendering her to a kill shelter.

I know a man in north Jersey, Jeff Coltenback who runs a rescue called Pitty Rescue. http://www.pittyrescue.com/

He specializes in Pitt Bull cases, and he should be a good lead for you. I sent him a private email, with a link to your blog, but I thought it might not hurt to comment here.

So happy to see your update that this beautiful dog has options of going to a good home. Please be very choosy and check the adoptive family thoroughly. God forbid she should go to some heartless person who would use the dog for fighting. Thank you so much for being such a great human being and caring enough to put the story out there so the dog can have a chance with a truly loving family. Will look forward to further updates and hearing that she has found a really wonderful family that will shower her with the love she deserves.

Please be very careful when placing pit bulls over the internet or to people who you do not know. A reputable rescue requires a home visit.

Too many dog fighters out there are looking for bait dogs. Bait dogs are gentle submissive pit bulls that thefighters use to train their dogs to be killers.

I am at capacity right now, but if you need help vetting a potential home, please let me know as I would be more than willing to help you through the placement process. Meanwhile I will reach out to rescues I know that will take pit bulls when they have room. You can reach me at: centcom@war-online.org

A big hug and many thanks to you and your buddy for what you’re doing for this dog. Pit Bulls are undeserving of the reputation they have—most are very sweet, intelligent dogs.

Lots happy thoughts to you all!

My prayers go with you and your new found friend to her new home– please be careful placing this beautiful pit bull. It seems easy enough to say “Can you give her a good home?” BUT not every one tells the truth or does what they say. It will only take one show of bad behavior and the new owner will drop her off at a shelter.

PLEASE – the best home is one that has EXPERIENCE WITH PIT BULLS, someone who knows the breed will know the difference between aggressive bad behavior and aggressive controlled protective behavior. Too often an unexperienced owner will bring a pit to rescue because of a mean growl, or excessive pulling or they ran after the meter reader.

I own a pit bull same age and gender and she’s my best friend, if you can’t find a reputable home, email me I’ll come get her….I’m in Minnesota but a gem like the one you found is hard to find.

You have gotten such great advice from so many 🙂

As a bully breed owner and advocate, I agree:
    – please utilize a Rescue to vet out potential adopters; there are far too many people looking to breed or fight dogs
    – please place the dog with a pit bull experienced home…and preferably a home without another pit bull.

Best of luck – please keep us posted!

Have you tried the Little Shelter in Huntington? They are a pretty fabulous organization. If you need a ride there with her, I’ll volunteer to drive her out (provided they agree to take her in advance).
