SHE FOUND A NEW HOME!! CLICK HERE!!

This morning, as a buddy of mine drove to work via the Williamsburg Bridge, he noticed something: a small gray dog chained to the pedestrian walkway, shivering, completely drenched and half-frozen. As you probably heard, New York had a very big snow storm last night; we’re almost certain her owners left her out in it overnight to die.

That same dog is now sleeping comfortably at my feet, well-fed, fully-bathed, and having been given a clean bill of health by the local vet.

005

My friend brought the dog to his office and spent the entire day making calls, not realizing how hard it is to find a home for a pit bull. Something like 1 in 800 rescued pit bulls find homes, and as far as I can tell, no “no-kill” shelter will accept them. I offered to take the dog for the night, since I live closer to my buddy’s office than he does.

002

Since she showed up to my apartment, she’s been a doll. Hasn’t barked once – in fact, I think the only sound I’ve heard was when she began whimpering when I left the room.

She’s young – the vet estimated her to be 1-2 years old. She knows how to sit, seems to understand stay, and is one of those great dogs that stays very close to your side, leash or no leash. Also, she has a gorgeous gray coat, and as you can see, neither her ears nor tail are clipped. Finally, she’s been exceptionally friendly and playful, both with my roommates and all 30+ co-workers at my friend’s office.

003

My friend’s going to take her back tomorrow and try to find her a home, but prospects are not looking hopeful, and eventually he’ll have to take her to a kill shelter. He asked if I’d put up some pictures on my site to see if anyone out there might be interested in taking her in, or perhaps has some advice on what to do with her (we e-mailed a few pit bull rescue groups, but they had little to offer).

Don’t get me wrong – I am fully aware that she’s a pit bull, and that there’s a rep that goes along with the breed. But this one has been well-behaved and quiet, and I just interrupted her sleep to scratch her belly and all she did was kick her foot and wag her tail happily.

She seems like a beautiful pet for the right person, and if you’re at all interested, please do not hesitate to e-mail me at nycscout@gmail.com. I’ll put you in touch with the person who found her and of course, you would certainly be able to meet her before committing to anything.

006

Anyway, I just finished eating a burrito and some nachos, and I noticed the dog watching me, looking for a treat. At first, my “master” instinct kicked in and I told her to go lay down, which she did. But then I broke down and gave her some left-overs.

After all, she just spent the night in one of the worst snow storms of the year, and probably only has a short time left anyway – why not spoil her a little before she’s gone?

PS – If you can do anything to help spread the word via Facebook/Twitter/Tumblr, both me and my new lady friend would be forever in your debt.

Please don’t bring her to a “kill” shelter!! There are tons of no-kill shelters in the NYC area! Meanwhile, we all will do whatever we can to help. Too bad you or your friend can’t keep her — I am a fatalist. Someone found a dog on the side of the road and saved it’s life, therefore she is “meant to be” with that person. Just sayin’. I will share on FB and Twitter as well. I am very well-connected in the dog world.

This is breaking my heart. I’ve spread the message on Twitter and Facebook. This beautiful dog could have been abandoned by someone who could no longer afford to feed it, or who was told by their landlord they couldn’t have it anymore. (I know NYCHA-Public Housing has now banned their tenants from having pit bulls and this has caused so many tenants to hide their dogs or give them away.) NYC shelters are full of unwanted dogs but outside of the metro area, you’re likely to find rescue groups and no-kill shelters. I hope you find a good home for him soon.

You are a great person for putting this up and giving this beautiful dog an opportunity to find a great home. I noticed someone else asked about her reaction to other dogs, how about cats? I live in NJ and have been looking to rescue a dog for a while now, but I do have a cat who loves dogs – just need the dog to love the cat as well. I’ve reposted this link on my blog and social networking sites too, in hopes she can be rescued. NJ has a great program called Wag On In Rescue. I don’t know if they take pit bulls, but it’s a great program. Something to look into and if you have any idea about the cat thing, let me know. Thanks!

thank you so much for taking this dog in, ya’ll are both wonderful people. if i didn’t live in GA i’d have her in a heartbeat. she could be my puppy’s twin! please give us an update on what’s going on with her, adoption vs shelter and if we can start a fund to send her somewhere she can have a loving family.

thanks again for taking her in!

How absolutely heartbreaking! I’ll never understand how people can do things like this to an animal. I unfortunately can’t take her, as my cockapoo is a handful all by himself, but I have posted this on Facebook and will let you know if anyone on my end is interested. In the meantime, thank you so much for taking her in and being her foster dad for the time being!

Thank you for your empathy and kindness to this poor animal!

I know our beloved City is harsh on these dogs, but there are a couple of places on LI you could try before you give up (I noticed a lot of the no-kill places ppl are suggesting, while I’m sure worthy, are a little too far away…) try Last Chance Animal Rescue http://www.lcarf.org/, North Shore Animal League http://www.animalleague.org, or ARF http://www.arfhamptons.org

And please keep us updated, if you would! Thank you again 🙂

She is a beautiful dog, she deserves more, as the owner of a Pit-Bull who won’t even bite a steak if its not well done (and cut in pieces I might add) this story breaks my heart. I have passed on the link, and in the meantime if you could create a paypal account, I would happily donate money to help feed her and provide her with dingo bones until she finds her forever home!!!

    God bless you

Err, sorry, accidentally hit the Submit button too early.

Just wanted to let you know that word seems to be spreading fast on Tumblr about this gorgeous pit. Just saying. :’) My sister and boyfriend live in the city and were planning on adopting a dog (specifically a pit or staffie)… it’s a little too early in terms of timing but I’ll still be sure to let them know about this doll.

She’s a beautiful dog. Have you tried your local craigslist? We often have people looking for pitbulls on ours. She’s gorgeous. 🙂 I’ll share this link around my network as well. 🙂

Have you found a place for the dog yet? If not I’m going to text my cousin who has an american stratfordshire terrier…and see if he or his friends know of anyone. She’s a beauty and looks just like his baby…

It’s horrible that someone would do this to her! She deserves a loving warm home.
