In Burbank, I often drive by this park where, last year, Ron Howard and wife Cheryl made a very sweet donation on their 50th anniversary: this “kissing chair,” two beautifully engraved bronze chairs reversed so a couple can sit and face each other. There’s only one problem –
Someone made the really, really poor decision to situate the chair in nonstop direct sunlight, and the bronze doesn’t just get hot. It becomes literally SCALDING. Like today, a breezy 80°, you can’t put your hand on it for more than a second before >actually< burning yourself.
Of course, in true SoCal fashion, rather then relocate the chair and actually fix the problem, a warning sign was installed instead. It’s now a pretty common occurrence to see visitors ignore the sign and plunk into the chair, only to scream and leap off in pain.
It’s really a shame, because not only is the chair gorgeous, it’s also very comfortable!
Ron and Cheryl used to go on dates to the park in their high school years, and wanted the chair to be used by future couples. Hopefully, Burbank can make it a little less painful for them??
