Shopping Cart Gets Cement Shoes In Williamsburg Park

I was walking by the small, triangle-shaped Macri Park in Williamsburg near the Lorimer stop today…

…when I noticed something that I think is new…

At the corner by Metropolitan and Meeker, someone has dumped a 4-foot x 4-foot mound of cement with a Home Depot shopping cart embedded in it:

There was no official plaque posted nearby, so I’m guessing it’s guerrilla art. I couldn’t tell if it was cemented to the ground, or was simply dropped into place, but either would be pretty impressive for a covert operation:

The carriage is filled with a bunch of six packs painted gray…and that’s it:

Weird, right? I can’t find a thing about this online. Anyone know anything? What did this poor shopping cart do??

I don’t know anything about the awesome public artwork, but the park has a name! It’s Macri Park, and I only know this because I used to manage the tiny namesake bar that faces it across Union.

It’s actually a pretty awesome park in that it houses a totally traditional oyster shell bocce-ball court.

Hey Scout – unrelated to park or shopping cart – I noticed a political ad against Tom DiNapoli on the sidebar. I’m a little surprised that you allow political advertising on the site (I don’t care one way or the other about DiNapoli)?

This is strikingly similar to a shopping cart statue that used to live in the small green space between Lafayette, Flatbush, and Schermerhorn, a few blocks from BAM. I think the pedestal is still there.

before the hispters took over, there were lots of stolen/abandoned shopping carts full of garbage sitting around. we used to call it trash, now it’s “art”. whatevs.
