A couple of years ago, I got to scout the historic Vernon power plant, an art deco behemoth built in 1933. When you step through the main entrance, you immediately find yourself in the control room…

And it’s a fascinating contrast of old vs new. Spanning the width of the room is the original control board – which has since been replaced by the handful of computers on the desk in the foreground.

The most incredible thing? The original board is still operational, and were the computers to fail, it could be used as a back-up.
